Accounting Manager

 

 

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

This individual performs senior accountant functions for Save The Bay.   The role requires a strong knowledge of fund accounting, Blackbaud’s Financial Edge accounting system, and general ledger accounting entries.  The Accounting Manager provides senior accounting functions in a full accrual, non-profit, fund accounting environment and is responsible for supervising an Accounting Assistant.  The position is full-time with benefits and reports to the Director of Finance.

 

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

·         Manage financial systems in accordance with GAAP:

o    Prepare or oversee entries of transactions in the journal of original entry.

o    Prepare and record standard and adjusting journal entries.

o    Maintain documentation of processes, policies, and internal controls.

o    Oversee and implement fund accounting, including donation and grant restrictions, temporarily restricted net assets, and revenue recognition policies.

o    Prepare, input and maintain budgeted income and expense line items within Financial Edge framework.

o    Maintain general ledger software system, including staying current with upgrades and optimizing use of the system.

 

·         Cash management:

o    Reconcile bank and investment account statements or other accounts.

o    Monitor cash balance in checking account and execute transfers in and out of money market accounts as needed to maintain cash availability.

o    Ensure proper approvals are obtained and documented for cash disbursements.

o    Transfer funds into long-term investment accounts or restricted capital accounts as necessary.

o    Record investment account transactions.

 

·         Monthly and annual reporting:

o    Ensure that all transactions have been recorded on the general ledger and books of original entry.

o    Review balance sheet accounts and reconcile to journals – including the review of agings.

o    Develop management reports with the Director of Finance.

o    Generate monthly financial statements and management reports using Financial Edge’s report generation capabilities.

 

·         Manage interface with Raiser’s Edge database:

o    Oversee the integration and transfer of Raiser’s Edge records into Financial Edge to insure proper classification of revenues.

o    Work closely with operations staff and the IT manager to ensure accurate and efficient classification of data entry.

o    Review appropriateness of fund classification of cash receipts and pledges.

o    Export cash receipt and pledge data to Financial Edge.

·         Manage accounts payable system:

o    Monitor work of Accounting Assistant

o    Work with operations and program staff in managing vendors, paying bills, and resolving vendor conflicts.

 

·         Manage payroll and benefits transactions:

o    Oversee Accounting Assistant entry of transactions to ADP and general ledger.

o    Calculate employee benefit allowance and deductions.

 

·         Provide support for annual audit process and federal and state non-profit filings:

o    Prepare confirmations and schedules requested by auditors.

o    Prepare supporting documentation as required for non-profit filings.

 

·         Oversee and/or execute government contract billing and reporting:

o    Monitor federal grant billings prepared by Accounting Assistant.

o    Prepare grant billings and transactions for Americorps grant.

o    Evaluate grant compliance.

 

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

·         Strong accounting experience and training in a full accrual, fund accounting, non-profit environment.

·         Strong experience in formalizing and documenting accounting procedures and policies.

·         Skilled in creating and maintaining Excel spreadsheets.

·         Financial management, reporting and budgeting skills.

·         Knowledge of Blackbaud’s Financial Edge general ledger accounting software.

·         Experience with Federal and State billing, transaction accounting and compliance elements.         

·         Strong written and verbal communication skills.

·         Attention to detail.

·         A team player who is able to listen well, inspire others, and lead by example.

·         A passion for the mission of Save The Bay.

 

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

·         CPA designation.

·         Skilled in creating and maintaining Excel spreadsheets.

·         Experience with Blackbaud’s Raiser’s Edge CRM software system.
