The Director of Education Technology  oversees agency technology operations including data collection and warehousing, application development, eLearning, and collaboration technologies. Employee oversees agency efforts to advance thoughtful and intentional use of technology to support student learning.

Responsibilities:

 Data management

  • Increase stakeholder access to data at all levels internally and externally;
  • Improve data quality through application of best practices and strong collaboration with internal and external data consumers.

Educational Technology and eLearning

  • Advocates for and designs programming to increase innovation at the classroom level;
  • Oversees state and federal grant programs designed to advance the use of technology to support student learning;
  • Create advantageous conditions for schools and Indiana students through price negotiation and quantity purchasing agreements related to technology related services;
  • Guides efforts to make information available to schools regarding innovative instructional and curricular approaches, online learning & digital curriculum options, and implementation of technology for learning across the state;
  • Supports local education agencies in the print to digital transition.
  • Serves in capacity of state coordinator for e-Rate, a federal program subsidizing basic internet connectivity for schools.

Planning

  • Participates in overall planning for the agency bringing a current knowledge and future vision of technology and systems as related to the agency’s operations;
  • Maintains knowledge of current educational issues and trends particularly as they relate to data use and educational technology;
  • Works with senior leadership and chief financial officer to budget for IT functions and programs.
  • Advocates for policy environment supportive of innovation and digital age learning.

Communicating

  • Engages with leadership in all areas of the agency to understand business needs and to seek opportunities to leverage technology;
  • Organizes a tech council with representatives from various parts of the organization to regularly discuss progress on existing business initiatives and opportunities for new initiatives;
  • Establishes and maintains strategic partnerships with key educators and collaborating institutions.
  • Represents the agency IT division at events and meetings that are within and outside state government;

Supervising

  • Directly supervises or provide functional direction to education technology staff;
  • Creates and maintains a team atmosphere and work environment and is a team player;
  • Prepares employee performance reports and evaluates work.

Preferred Experience:

Masters degree from an accredited college/university, and 5 years of education technology experience

  • Broad knowledge of the education enterprise including, research, historical and emerging trends, policy, funding, and federal and state programming;
  • Strong interpersonal skills to create a productive team environment and to engage with internal and external stakeholders;
  • Extensive knowledge of the information systems development life cycle, information technology, project tools and approaches to development and implementation;
  • Ability to frame issues based on the policy implications associated with managing what is otherwise a very technical discipline;
  • Ability to manage logistical tasks i.e., anticipating work necessary to accomplish goals, drawing upon available organizational capacity as needed to accomplish work, paying attention to details;
  • Ability to manage diverse human resources and encourage/influence high levels of performance;
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing;
  • Thorough knowledge of project cost management, benefit analysis, risk management, funding and estimation of resources;
  • Ability to develop relationships with a variety of individuals in the educational arena including school administrators, data managers, teachers, researchers, business people and policy makers.

About Indiana Department of Education:

he Indiana Department of Education, Division of School and Community Nutrition Program is the administering agency for the U.S. Department of Agricultures Child Nutrition Programs. The Division is actively involved in improving the health and well being of Indianas citizens, especially children.

The Division works closely with food service professionals in a variety of settings, including public and private schools, day care organizations, and other nonprofit organizations that serve nutritious meals to eligible recipients.

Division employees distribute a variety of USDA developed educational and training resources. The Division also provides a variety of technical assistance and training opportunities for food service, education, and health care professionals with the aim of helping the states children choose healthy life styles for successful living. Collaborative relationships are maintained with many governmental agencies and other organizations with similar goals.

Mission Statement:
Provide monetary and food assistance to schools and institutions participating in USDA Child Nutrition Programs enabling them to efficiently and attractively provide nutritious meals. The Division offers eligible participating organizations education, training, and technical assistance to ensure compliance with USDA regulations, policies, and instructions.
